eLearning Lunch & Learn

Concept mapping has been used as an educational tool for many years. Students are taught how to create them as part of their pre-writing of essays. Science classes use them to present concepts and systems.

But what about the training community? Ever wondered what your incoming class already knows about your topic? Do you assess their prior knowledge? Adult learning theory posits that how we organize our knowledge will affect what we learn. Do we have ways to assess knowledge organization? Have you ever delivered training and wondered whether the audience got the big picture? Not the isolated facts, but how everything works together as a system? Wish you had an alternative way to assess knowledge other than using multiple choice questions or work samples? Are your experts retiring soon? Need to capture their knowledge?

Presentation topics:

Kurt Steuck will describe concept mapping as a knowledge tool and show several examples. He'll cover a variety of uses of concept mapping to demonstrate its flexibility-capturing expert knowledge, organizing knowledge, delivering training, and assessing what our learners know. Specifically, he'll cover:

  • What are concept maps and traditional education uses
  • Existing tools: Free and paid tools for mobile devices and laptop/desktops
  • Professional uses: Personal use and potential professional uses
