Gaming in Education and Training: What does research say about it?

Over the past two decades, gaming as an education and training tool has blossomed due to the advent of affordable and accessible electronic technology. The professional community has spent a lot of energy on the topic publishing books, journal articles, reviews of research, white papers, and marketing materials. Research centers, non-profit institutes, and for-profit companies have been created to advance the use of games in education and training. But all of this begs the question, “What do we really know about the instructional effectiveness of games?”

In his attempt to understand life, the universe, and everything, Kurt Steuck has been reviewing the research literature on gaming. In our upcoming eLearning Lunch & Learn, he will share his understanding of the effectiveness of the use of games in education and training. He’ll cover definitions and characteristics of games, examples, affordances and challenges of gaming in addition to summarizing research findings. His current understanding, in 140 characters or less, is that the answer to the question is “42.”
